Rhino Sands is a luxury tented camp, set in the riverine forest on a peninsula of the Msunduze River in the big five Manyoni Private Game Reserve. The camp is an intimate and exclusive safari experience, with a maximum of eight guests in camp at any one time. Each guest tent has its own private living space, verandah and pool, and outdoor shower.
Manyoni Private Game Reserve was established by a group of committed conservationists to expand the range of endangered black rhinos. Manyoni is a reserve of exceptional beauty and one of the premier wildlife-viewing destinations in KwaZulu Natal, South Africa. The reserve is not only home to the Big Five, as their commitment to endangered species conservation has also seen the reintroduction of African wild dogs and cheetah. Decorated in a classic safari style, Rhino Sands immerses guests in the luxurious and romantic feel of an east African safari. This classical design set in a tented camp complete with modern conveniences captures the true spirit of safari that we’ve all fallen in love with. Each tent has it’s own private pool, outdoor shower, and open-air bathtub, creating the perfect private oasis for relaxing on honeymoon.

From the camps design, built within and among the riverine forest to complement rather than dominate the environment, to the use of solar electricity, the entire camp was built and will be operated in an ecofriendly manner. Offering organic coffee and teas, wines produced using biodynamic methods, seasonal menus, and biodegradable and organic amenities, the environment and the camp’s impact upon it has been considered with every decision made in running Rhino Sands.
The Rhino Sands team were each individually selected in part due to their passion for safari and their love of Africa’s wild places. The goal is for each guest to experience every day on safari as a unique and exciting adventure, and the team has been empowered to create this feeling for them. Guests might enjoy the romance of decadent sundowners while out on game drive or a bush dinner twinkling with lantern lights surrounded by the sounds of the bush. For honeymooners private dinners and romantic turndowns are offered at no additional cost. Each day will be a little different from the day before, inspiring guests to take these special opportunities to truly appreciate the magic that the African bush holds.
•Disconnect and Re-connect
Rhino Sands’ ethos is one of connection with nature and people. This is why tents were chosen rather than built structures and why the camp is so small and intimate. While wifi is provided in guest tents, guests are asked to refrain from using their devices in public spaces. The lodge facilitates disconnecting from our busy digital lives in the belief that living in the moment is one of the most precious parts of the safari experience and enables connection, not just with the environment, but with one another as well.
What I loved most about our stay there was that compared to other safari lodges, you were out there by yourself on the game reserve. You were never competing with hoards of other tourists or safari jeeps, there was more staff than guests to serve your every need. You could be in the bathtub outside on your private deck and walkie talkie a drink order and have a butler bring it to you while wild game are grazing around you. The entire experience was magical and unlike any safari lodge that I have seen that is out there AND affordably priced!
